Ghostbusters ties in with the 2016 Ghostbusters movie as a reboot of a franchise. However, there is no connection to the film's story or any of the characters. It is described as taking place after the events of the film and follows the adventures of a group of four unnamed Ghostbusters in Manhattan. They receive tasks in various places, sometimes on several levels for each. Locations, unlocked gradually, include Aldridge Mansion, St. Lou's Cemetery, Wavering Hills Asylum, 13th Street Station, Queen Charlotte, and Limbo. The game is played with up to four local players who can each control a Ghostbuster on the same screen. When playing alone, other characters are controlled by the CPU. There are two male characters and two female characters with different stats for health, speed, damage, and weapon overheat. They also have a unique weapon and grenade type.
Characters follow a largely linear path through the environment with dual-stick controls for movement independent of shooting direction. Each character has a primary weapon such as a rifle, shotgun, mini gun, or pistols used to eliminate ghosts. A grenade can be thrown as a secondary attack, with some time before it becomes available again. Grenades include Flashbang, Electroshock, Dark Matter, and Mud. The main weapon can overheat, so sometimes it is necessary to wait a bit or use a separate key to clear the heat meter. Points are split between party members for kills and kills. They can also help each other in various ways, including resurrecting each other when they are dead. At any time, the PKE Counter can be activated to scan the environment for paranormal activity. This is needed to locate special green dots for points or to follow the purple trails that usually lead to a strong enemy. While PKE is on, movement is slower. Many objects in the environments are destructible and can be knocked down for extra points.
