Based on the children's show on Cartoon Network, Generator Rex: Agent of Providence is a beat-em-up action game where players control the central character Rex as he continues to battle the troubles of EVO torments Earth.
The story revolves around Rex trying to stop the villainous Van Kleiss from threatening Earth. Rex roams the game collecting – or trying to collect – blueprints and evidence against Van Kleiss. Throughout the adventure, Rex must also work to regain powers lost during an event early in the game, and also absorbs nanites from some infected people, many of whom have turned into monsters. As Rex has amnesia, clues to his past can also be gathered from various places in the game.
Rex's powers include Smackhands (giant robotic fists), Slam Cannon, BFS (Big Fat Sword), Funchucks (massive spinning fists inspired by nunchucks), and a few others. Many of these must be earned back as the player progresses through the game. While the game generally plays like a beat-em-up, there are brief breaks with stages with intense driving and a drop sequence in which players avoid EVO monsters and other debris. Once at Providence Headquarters, players can replay completed stages in Time Trial Challenges.
