Gallop Racer is both a horse racing simulation and an action/arcade racing game.
When choosing horses for your stable, you need to consider many factors. For example, is the horse a long-distance or short-distance runner? Does it work better on a dry track or on a wet track? The factors seem to be endless at first glance.
Once you have your horse, you can then race it. Unlike several horse racing games from that era, you can control the horse on the track instead of just watching. In fact, you really control the jockey. The controls basically boil down to pressing the face buttons when you need to make the horse move; similar to riding a horse in The Ocarina of Time, but without the bend. However, you can't lead the horse the whole race, otherwise it will tire and you will be left in the dust.
Once the race is over, you get your money back. Each slot earns you a specific amount, which you can then use to upgrade your racehorse ranks. If you prefer not to spend more money, you can also breed them, creating a "super racehorse" from two exceptional racers. The horse isn't exactly great, but he will almost certainly have a prolific career.
