Although it is a sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, there are few direct ties to the story. Luso is a young college student ready for summer vacation, but forced to stay late and help librarian Mr. Randell clean up. Luso arrives in the library to find himself alone, but notices a strange-looking book with only half of its pages filled. He seems to stop waiting for a name, so Luso provides his. Suddenly he is transported to the other world of Ivalice. From then on his time is spent exploring the world, trying to figure out what happened to him and how he can come back.
As in other Final Fantasy Tactics titles, the gameplay centers around a grid-based battle between two small groups. The characters take turns one by one, with an order and frequency determined by their speed. Each turn, they have the option to move and perform a single action. Not necessarily in that order. Battles usually end with the other party's defeat, although sometimes there are other goals, such as defeating the leader or examining special locations in a stage for an item. As in Tactics Advance, most battles are optional rather than required to complete the story. Battles, as well as other tasks like deliveries, can be accepted in town pubs. You no longer directly fight other clans for control of areas, but attempt to gain control of an area each year through auctions. However, Abandoned Clans may want to tell you about it afterwards.
