When a village girl falls ill after a birthday party, the hero must go to town to get medicine. And then, event after event, he embarks on a quest that will reveal the story of this village in the forest, the villagers, and the world around them.
At the start of the game, the player must create the Hero, choosing a man or woman from one of the four races of the Crystal Chronicles universe: the swift Selkies who can double jump and are effective archers, the learned Yukes and their superiors the magical power, the powerful Lilties for hand-to-hand combat, and the skilled Clavats who can do a little of everything.
The game itself involves venturing into dungeons, fighting various enemies and bosses using melee or ranged attacks and various spells, and solving puzzles. While doing so, the player can hire up to three customizable bodyguards to accompany the main character. It is possible to take control of any of these characters at any point in the game. More bodyguards can be created and can be switched in and out of the party.
In the main town, there is also a Quest Shoppe where a single character can enter and complete various tasks to earn money and rare materials to create new equipment.
A multiplayer mode is accessible at any save point via Wi-Fi or wireless internet connection, and can invite up to three friends (who take the place of bodyguards) into the game. New players can help in dungeons and quests, there are also versus quests that pit players against each other.
The Wii version is largely identical to the DS version in gameplay, but is played on a single screen. The multi-console engine allows players of the Wii and DS versions to play together, and Wii players can create masks based on their Miis.
