Much like previous World Cup licensees, the 2010 version gives the player the ability to guide the nation of their choice through the most prestigious football tournament in the world. However, the novelty of the series is the possibility of playing the qualifying phases with a team from your region. Also new is the "Story of Qualifying" mode, which places players at a key moment in a country's qualifying campaign and tasks them with recreating it.
