Project Zero in Europe and Australia, named Fatal Frame in North America is a series of survival horror type video games published by Tecmo, started in 2001. The first game in the series, Project Zero, was released in 2001 on PlayStation 2 and in 2002 on Xbox. Five main episodes were released, on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Wii or Wii U, as well as a spin-off on Nintendo 3DS.
Project Zero 3: The Tormented was released in 2005 exclusively for PlayStation 2.
It features a photographer named Rei Kurosawa, who, after the death of her fiancé in a car accident, decides to go do a report in an old mansion. Said mansion is rumored to be haunted. When shooting in the mansion, the ghost of Yuu, Rei's deceased fiancé, appears in the camera viewfinder. Troubled, Rei chases after Yuu and finds herself on the ground surrounded by four girls who drive nails into her feet and hands. In this third part, we find Miku Hinasaki, who appeared in the first part. The latter has become Rei's assistant and lives with her. Project Zero 3 features three characters, namely Rei, Miku, and Kei Amakura (Mio and Mayu's uncle), each performing a mission independently. Rei notices at the end of each mission that a blue snake tattoo gradually covers her body when she wakes up. The game takes up the ingredients of the first and second parts, namely the use of the camera obscura. Unlike the first two installments, the characters move around Rei's house in broad daylight and can only go to the mansion while they sleep.
