Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City is a Japanese-style role-playing game. The hitherto advanced town of Armorroad has been, for half of it, submerged by the sea; adventurers and wanderers from far and near come to venture into the intricate labyrinths that lie underground to unravel the mystery and reach the mythical Yggdrasil tree.
The town is where the guild plans and organizes exploration.
There is the Inn where adventurers can restore health, store and retrieve items, and save the game
The company after to buy weapons, armor, shields, helmets, gauntlets, accessories and items, forge weapons and change party equipment
The bistro, a meeting place where to get information and respond to the demands of city dwellers
The Explorers Guild where new adventurers can be found and members can rest, leave or retire
The port of Inver, where to leave to embark on any type of maritime quest, barter with other players
The Senatus, where major events in history take place
Dungeons are navigated in first-person view. When enemies are engaged in combat, they are displayed on the upper screen, along with small rectangles indicating the health and tech points of each party member. Issued commands are resolved in turn. None of the player characters are ever shown. The lower screen permanently displays the map of the maze: although automatic mapping is an authorized option, manual mapping is a fundamental part of the gameplay: using the stylus, the player can draw level plans, while noting things found, seen, browsed in, etc.
The guild can be joined by adventurers of the following classes: prince/princess, gladiator, hoplite, buccaneer, ninja, monk, zodiac, wildling, crossbowman, farmer and maybe a few other secrets. Each class has an assortment of skills they can learn and master. When a character level increases, a skill point is gained, allowing you to choose which skills to develop and to what extent. Each skill is capable of ten degrees of improvement. Some of the skills have no prerequisites; others only become available if some have reached a required level. The skill trees are summarized in a brochure included in the game case. Most weapons can also be upgraded in various ways through forging.
It is possible to save the game on no more than one slot; save points can be found in the city and one for several levels only. Records i.e. Monstrous Codex, Item Compendium, Epic Glossary give an overview of all finds and discoveries made as well as enemies encountered and defeated.
