In the past, the world was ravaged by endless wars and conflicts. The fighting only stopped when five sisters with divine powers used their magic song to defeat the warlords and bring peace to the lands. These Intoners now rule over various parts of the world, where they are worshiped and revered by their subjects. However, there is a sixth and older sister, Zero, who wishes to kill her siblings and take their power for herself. A year after failing to defeat the other Intoners, Zero sets off with his dragon Mikhail to kill them one by one.
Set roughly a century before the first Drakengard, this game places the player in the role of Zero, who can be accompanied by up to two AI characters who join over the course of the story. Gameplay is largely similar to other entries in the series, consisting of hack-and-slash ground combat and dogfights in which Zero rides Mikhail. Performing combos fills Zero's tension gauge, which she can tap into to unleash her Intoner powers. In Intoner mode, Zero's attack speed and power increase and she becomes invulnerable to enemy attacks. Zero can wield four different weapon types: swords, bracers, chakrams, and spears, and each individual weapon can be upgraded as it is used in battle.
