The clumsy but brave knight Dirk the Bold is on a quest to save the pretty Princess Daphne. The princess has been kidnapped by the evil dragon Monkey and imprisoned in a medieval castle owned by an even more evil wizard called Mordroc. From now on, it is up to Dirk to use his courage and his quick reflexes to thwart the traps of the castle, if he wants to save the princess and her skin.
Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair can be seen as a reimagining of the 1983 arcade game: in terms of gameplay, it deviates significantly from it, being a full-fledged action platformer with character movement unlimited. Dirk must fight enemies, jump across platforms and hazards, and solve some puzzles along the way. Health and mana points can be upgraded during the game. Dirk can also use a crossbow to fight enemies and solve some of the puzzles. Collecting dragon essences scattered around the castle grants him new powers.
The game features the familiar cartoon style of the original release (made with the cel-shaded technique), as well as many familiar locations and enemies.
