The Dragon Crown is a legendary artifact that allows its wearer to control any dragon. The King of Hydeland became obsessed with it and many adventurers set out to find it. The game takes place in a medieval fantasy world and has all 2D graphics, with 3D depth. He has an exaggerated anatomy (like big bouncing breasts and wide hips in females and exaggerated muscles resulting in a V-shape in male warriors, etc.) aesthetic. Rather than having dialogues, the entire story of the game is told. The player controls a character chosen from one of six classes: Amazon, Fighter, Elf, Dwarf, Sorcerer and Sorceress. The characters have a few customization options: name, color palette, voice language, and the player can enter text to create phrases for the characters to say when selected, encounter another player, defeated, or revived. Each class has its own set of skills and equipment. Some of these classes, like Dwarf and Witch, are made for more experienced players.
The city serves as a hub where different areas such as the Temple, Adventurer's Guild, and Castle can be accessed for different purposes. Exiting the city leads outside of Hydeland, where various levels, in which the player fights hordes of enemies in side-scrolling action until the area boss is defeated, can be accessed. Loot and experience are rewarded after clearing a dungeon. Loot must be identified at Morgan's Magic Item Shop before equipping. More locations, both in town and outside, unlock as the story progresses. To complete quests, the player can be accompanied by up to three other adventurers, who can be controlled by the AI or controlled by other players, online or offline. An additional character, a rogue named Rannie, follows adventurers through dungeons and helps lock doors, chests, and hidden objects in the background. The player will occasionally come across a pile of bones. These remains of fallen adventurers can be brought to the Temple of Canaan to be resurrected or buried. Risen Adventurers are the NPCs that will accompany the player, and they can be selected at the Dragon's Haven Inn. They must be reselected before each quest.
