The Wii debut of the long-running Dragon Quest series is set in the land of Avalonia and is an "on-rails" shooter, which uses the Wii Remote as a sword and shield.
The game's protagonist is a player-named sixteen-year-old boy who is about to take the March of the Worthy, an initiation rite of passage to manhood.
The player character is the son of Claymore, a hero who helped defeat a great threat to Avalonia at the cost of his right arm. Two other characters assist the player throughout the adventure, Fleurette and Alance. Incidentally, all three NPCs are named after swords.
The player defines their level of participation, primarily by how often they cast magic. The player only uses standard physical attacks and a "Master Stroke" special attack when their power meter is full.
The game is a true Rail Shooter style, with monsters appearing in the same positions every game.
