In Monsters: Joker, you play as an aspiring monster tournament competitor. The goal is to recruit and train a team of monsters strong enough to win the Granpool Archipelago Monster Tournament.
The game uses the same turn-based battle engine as Dragon Quest VIII, where commands are issued and then the game displays the results in 3D.
There are many monsters spread over 8 families so it's up to the player to find a combination that takes into account the strengths and weaknesses of the monsters. The player character also does not fight directly in battles, but helps the monster team with potions and other power-ups.
Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is also used to battle AI opponents ranked similarly to player monsters, but this can only be done once per day so that daily rewards are not collected too much.
