Our hero—a young Monster Scout desperate to compete in the championship—hopes to enter the Monster Scout Challenge for the honor of becoming world champion. So, the hero boards the Albatross, an airship bound for the Monster Arena. Unfortunately, fate has other plans for the ship. It is blown off course by a terrible storm and crash-lands on an unknown island. The island is a dangerous place, full of exotic and never-before-seen monsters, waiting to be spotted. But more importantly, the Albatross's passengers have been scattered across the island. Our hero has nothing to do but take the controls, find them, and find a way to escape the enigmatic island.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 is a monster-recruiting RPG in the vein of its predecessor. Our hero encounters monsters in the field and engages them in turn-based battles with their own monsters, either defeating them or recruiting them. He can modify each monster's abilities from various skill trees and combine them to create new monsters with their own unique abilities.

The player can also take his team into battle with other players, locally or online, and spot monsters using Tag Mode from other players in this game as well as Dragon Quest IX and VI.
