Released in arcades in 1981, Donkey Kong was not only Nintendo's first real hit for the company, but also marked the introduction of two of their most popular mascots: Mario (originally "Jumpman ") and Donkey Kong.
Donkey Kong is an action platformer where Mario has scaled four different industrial-themed levels (construction zone, cement factory, elevator-themed level, and removing rivets from beams) in an effort to rescue the damsel in distress, Pauline, from the Great Ape before time runs out. Once the rivets are removed from the last level, Donkey Kong falls and the two lovers reunite. From there, the levels start over at a higher difficulty.
