Unlike most Final Fantasy games, Dissidia is more of a fighting game than a classic role-playing game. It does, however, retain the intricate story, character level, and customization. The game features main characters from other Final Fantasy titles, two from each title (the protagonist and the antagonist). The plot revolves around the battle of the two gods, Cosmos and Chaos. The protagonists will form teams in order to fight through the armies of Chaos and find their crystals which will then be used to destroy Chaos. Each character has their own campaign to complete at the end of which a crystal will be collected.
The game also features single combat and an arcade mode where the player will be able to choose their fighter and opponent (opponents are automatically chosen by the game if playing in arcade mode). All character experience and skills acquired during the campaign are carried over to other game modes (and vice versa, for example: if Cloud had a level of 12 at the end of the campaign, he will also appear as having the same level when he sees him in the character list in Arcade or Quick Battle mode).
Another feature is that the items you find during the campaign belong to you, the player. This means that you can move items from one character to another. The game also features additional content such as villains, costumes, etc. which can be unlocked using PP. You get these points from each fight and completed campaign.
