Tom Cruise's movie brought NASCAR racing to the masses, and Mindscape did the same for gamers with this license. If you mentally change the names of the drivers, it can be seen as a recreation of an actual NASCAR race rather than a direct recreation of the movie.
You play as Cruise's Cole Trickle character (his name, like many others, is slightly different from a real NASCAR racer of the era) against your rivals on 8 tracks, based on real life counterparts. The races are all on ovals, although the exact lengths, corner types and gradients are varied. This means that the ideal racing line on one track can put you in the wall on another. Qualifying is integrated into the races themselves.
From time to time you will have to park in the pit stop area. By doing so, you control all five members of the pit crew. Losing time in the pit will cause you to lose positions in the race. The other runners, however, never stop.
The NES version only has the 3rd person perspective.
