Dark Souls (Dāku Souru?) is an action-RPG video game developed by Japanese company FromSoftware and published by Namco Bandai for NTSC-U/C and PAL edition. It was released in September/October 2011 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (except Japan for the latter) and in August 2012 on PC. A remastered edition, Dark Souls: Remastered was released in 2018 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
The player embodies a human cursed by the Dark Mark making him undead, and evolves in Lordran in a medieval-fantasy world in the third person. The game focuses on mastering gameplay and using skills, weapons, armor, magic, and items to complete battles, especially against game bosses. The level design pushes the player to explore the environment. The story is very cryptic, punctuated by rare cinematics, encouraging the player to explore the rich lore of the game and encouraging the imagination to make the connections in these snippets of stories, resulting in the emergence of many theories on the Dark Souls universe and story.
It is the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls. A sequel, Dark Souls II was released in March 2014, followed by Dark Souls III, released in April 2016.
