Contender is an arcade-style boxing game that features Exhibition mode, VS. mode, a Main Event mode and a Tournament mode.
Exhibition mode allows the player to choose a boxer and fight a computer boxer. The VS. allows two players to compete in the boxing ring. Tournament mode allows the player to participate in a tournament.
The Main Event mode allows the player to choose one of eight different boxers, each with their own skill set (life, power, speed and stamina), and fight their way through the ranks (local, national and global ) by defeating 40 different boxers. to win the world championship. If the player is good enough to win the world championship, then he has to defend his belt against many challengers. Players can improve their skills by winning matches and practice between matches by practicing with their coach. Progressing in this mode also unlocks boxers for exhibition mode.
In the ring, each boxer can throw punches like jabs, overcuts, hooks, and crosses, and are also able to duck and weave and block high and low while on defense.
