The Mega Drive, or Sega Genesis in North America, is a fourth-generation video game console designed and marketed by the Japanese manufacturer Sega Enterprises, Ltd. The Mega Drive is Sega's third console, succeeding the Master System. Sega first released the console in Japan as the Mega Drive in 1988, and the console was later released in 1989 in North America, renamed the Genesis in that territory. In 1990, the console was released in most other territories as the Mega Drive.
