The Dreamcast (Dorīmukyasuto?) is a video game console developed by Sega and the successor to the Saturn. Released in November 1998 in Japan, it was the first sixth-generation console to hit the market, ahead of its competitors—the Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft's Xbox, and Nintendo's GameCube. Its name is a composite of the words dream and cast (from broadcast). It was known during its development as the Blackbelt, Dural, and Katana.
