The PlayStation Vita, or PS Vita (sometimes spelled PSVita), is an eighth-generation handheld video game console developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Its code name was Next Generation Portable (NGP). The console was released on December 17, 2011 in Japan, December 23, 2011 in Hong Kong, and February 22, 2012 in the rest of the world. It succeeds the PlayStation Portable and the various versions that derive from it. Its main competitors are Nintendo's Nintendo 3DS and the smartphone market
