The Wii U is a video game console marketed by Nintendo, succeeding the Wii. It was released on November 18, 2012 in North America, November 30, 2012 in Europe, and December 8, 2012 in Japan. The first eighth-generation video game console to be released, it competes with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The console was announced on June 7, 2011, during E3 2011. The Wii U was the first home console to offer a controller with an integrated touch screen, the Wii U GamePad. The two main new features of the console are provided by this one.
