The Nintendo 3DS is an eighth generation portable console developed by Nintendo, with the particularity of an autostereoscopic 3D display (without glasses). The Nintendo 3DS is the successor to the Nintendo DS, and is backwards compatible with the latter's software. It is available at launch in two colours: Blue Lagoon and Black Cosmos. Its main competitor is Sony's PlayStation Vita.
Announcing the console on March 23, 2010, Nintendo officially unveiled it at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010 on June 15, inviting attendees to test it. According to some analysts, Nintendo's timing, which had shifted attention with the launch of the all-new Nintendo DSi XL, was probably intended to avoid leaks from the Japanese press. The console was released on February 26, 2011 in Japan and in March in other major markets (United States, Europe).
