Chakan is a somewhat unorthodox platformer with its mix of relentless difficulty, spell crafting, and dark themes. In the game, you control Chakan who was cursed not to die. For him to rest in peace, he will have to go through many levels of hack and slash platforming. The ultimate goal is to defeat all primary realms and achieve inner peace.
During your travels, you must defeat bosses in each of the four realms of air, water, fire, and earth to continue and acquire weapons that will help you progress through other realms. Chakan can acquire the mallet, scythe, grappling hook and ax with his standard swords and depending on the weapons equipped, different abilities are unlocked. Some weapons allow for example the double jump, while others can knock down walls.
Additionally, the player is able to collect potions that can be used in alchemy. By pressing "Start" at any time, one can create various spells that improve the character such as jumping higher, setting fire to your blades or even invisibility. Some levels actually require you to use specific spells to progress, forcing you beyond the confines of normal platforming. In addition to all this, there is a time limit imposed on each level.
