Bubble Bobble is the story of two humans, Bub and Bob, who roam the mysterious monster cave and magically transform into dinosaurs. The only way to transform back is to reach the bottom of the cave...
Bubble Bobble is a platform game, with each level being a single screen. Enemies must be cleared from one level to advance to the next. With one player controlling Bub and the other controlling Bob, the player can jump and collect items for points (like fruit). Bub and Bob's real power, however, is the ability to blow bubbles. These bubbles can serve as platforms on which to jump or trap enemies. Enemies trapped in a bubble must be jumped by jumping into it, when they turn into fruit. Additionally, power-ups sometimes float in bubbles. They include lightning, which flies horizontally towards enemies, and water, which drags the player and enemies down and flows down platforms. Taking too long to complete any level will summon Baron Von Blubba, who will float around the screen trying to destroy the player.
The NES version has a few extra stages bringing the total number of stages to 112. The Sharp X68000 version contains a hidden mini-game called Sybubblun. It contains a set of 20 original challenging levels, with the game being re-skinned with a Syvalion theme.
