The sequel to Saga Frontier, but also lesser known Romancing SaGa games, Saga Frontier 2 lets you play the stories of two main characters - a young Prince Gustav XIII, who was exiled from his homeland because he could not use the mysterious power of Anima and becoming a worthy successor to the throne, and William Knights, a treasure hunter, who strives to find ancient artifacts containing great powers. Their stories are intertwined, and each story takes up almost a lifetime: characters grow and die, new characters are born, and so on.
Saga Frontier 2 breaks away from its predecessor's non-linear approach by introducing a new event-based story system, telling stories in a simpler way and limiting available characters and locations to visit. As usual for the series, stat upgrades and new abilities are gained directly in battle, not by gaining experience points and levels like in most other RPGs. Magic spells are divided into six elements which can also be combined and depend on equipped items and the environment to draw the correct Anima. Hybrid techniques that combine weapon commands with spell elements also exist. Similar to Konami's Suikoden series, there are three types of combat: turn-based group combat, one-on-one (duel), and strategic military battles.
