Blackwater is a first-person shooter in which the player controls agents Devin, Baird, Smash, and Eddie. The game takes place in a North African village, and players are tasked with all sorts of different tasks that modern-day soldiers face in wartime. This includes protecting aid workers and civilians.
The country is invaded by a warlord named General Limbano. He and his soldiers must not cause the deaths of these civilians. This is why America has sent a team of agents. While controlling the main characters, players move along a defined path, possibly using the Kinect peripheral's features to control the character and kill enemies. Targets must be highlighted by moving your hand over their head and hovering over them for a few seconds to shoot. To take cover, players must duck and lean from side to side.
Devin and Baird use assault rifles. As Smash, the player uses a shotgun, and as Eddie, a sniper rifle. Throughout each stage of the game, there are moments where the player must perform actions such as jumping over gaps or breaking down doors.
