Battleship is a turn-based strategy game based on the movie of the same name. During a training mission, a fleet of American soldiers is trapped by a bubble and attacked by spaceships. To survive, they must battle aliens through 26 campaign missions. The goal is usually to eradicate all enemies, but sometimes there are other goals like retreating or defending a certain ship.
Each turn, the player moves ships and uses them to attack the enemy. Variables to consider are e.g. ship range, size (for navigation), point of attack (attacking from behind is more effective), water depth (some ships are more water efficient low or deep) and unit health (a unit becomes less effective in attack and defense when it loses health). The commander, who changes from mission to mission, grants a changing passive boost to his unit and has a special move (essentially a stronger version of the boost) that can be activated when a special bar is filled by defeating enemies - however, The alien commander also possesses one of these abilities.
Although most ships differ only in size and range, there are also special units: supply ships are important for maintaining a constant flow of missiles and fuel (needed for each move), repair ships are useful for keeping other units alive and rubber rafts can capture ports. When two larger ships meet, the player can optionally enter a duel mode and aim and fire missiles directly. Outside of the campaign, the player can play skirmishes (replay completed campaign missions with a commander of their choice).
