Discovery takes place after Assassin's Creed II and before Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The player assumes the role of Ezio Auditore da Firenze and takes place primarily in Spain where Ezio battles the inquisition while trying to free his fellow assassins and foil the evil plans the Templars are plotting.
The game uses full 3D graphics but with a fixed camera to make it work and look like a side-scrolling platformer. Ezio is deadlier than ever, but his arsenal is limited to his blade and throwing knives. Each mission has a certain mode that sort of decides how the level should be played. Stealth mode only allows you to be spotted by the enemy a certain number of times before you have to start over from the last checkpoint. Chase mode requires you to run away or reach a location or someone within the time limit. And normal mode lets you choose which mission approach you want to use. You can run and cut enemies or sneak up and use stealth kills.
Unlike the console versions of the games, the leap of faith is quite limited and you'll never see the hay you jump into, and most will happen as a cutscene anyway. But there are hiding places such as shadows, hay carts, bushes or empty barrels that will help you in your stealth missions. If you approach the enemy from behind, you can perform a stealthy one-hit kill, but if you prefer the frontal assault, the type of combat will vary depending on your opponent. Stronger opponents can block your attacks and you have to either break through their defense or rely on counterattacks to hurt them. Not all moves will be available from the start and will gradually open up as the story progresses.
