Arx was once a prosperous place. However, one night, the sun on the world of Exosta never rose again, and the bitter cold forced its inhabitants to head to the dwarven mines. There, a new city was built, and humans, trolls, goblins, dwarves, and other races lived in peace until the scarce resources proved insufficient for everyone. Animosity began to build, and conflicts between the races ensued. The protagonist begins the game in a daze, dragged into a cell by a goblin. Where is he? Why did he end up there? Who is he? With this in mind, the adventure begins...
Inspired by the Ultima Underworld series, Arx Fatalis is a first-person role-playing game set in a vast underground world. All locations are connected by passages, tunnels, and staircases, with eight levels in total. Despite their dungeon-like appearance, the locations also include populated settlements such as Arx City, where the player character can purchase and store supplies, as well as other non-hostile areas. The player is, however, free to attack and potentially kill any non-player character encountered. While several main quests must be completed in a specific order to unlock a new area, the player can freely access and explore certain locations at certain points in the game. There are no dialogue options, but some missions can be completed in different ways, and there are also a few side quests.
