The story of Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia takes place in the world of Sol Ciel, a world made up of two floating islands connected by the tower of Ar tonelico. Long ago, people had built a great civilization under the guidance of the goddesses the Trio of Elemia, but over the years things have changed; there were two catastrophes that led to the destruction of the world. in the first disaster, most of the lands and skies were lost, in the second, the super civilization was lost; now, in the third era, another disaster begins. Viruses born in the Altar of the Apostles began to appear, although not normally in physical form, now took the form of monsters and could destroy the world. In the upper levels of the tower is a town called Platina where the Knights of Elemia reside; their job is to control virus outbreaks to preserve the tower. One of these knights is Lyner Barsett; the main character of the story, he will have to go on a quest to find the hymn crystal that can save the tower of Ar tonelico and the whole world.
Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia is an RPG style game where you control Lyner Barsett. At the start of the game, your airship crashes into the underworld; you'll not only need to locate the Anthem Crystal somewhere in the Underworld, but then you'll need to figure out how to get back to the upper levels of the Tower! The gameplay offers both an exploration mode and a combat mode. When exploring, you can walk around the many locations in Sol Ciel; you will meet many people to talk to, various towns and cities, and useful items. In many areas, battles occur randomly; on the screen is a colored meter - starting with green, it slowly fades to red. The closer the meter gets to red, the more likely you are to encounter a random battle.
