This version of Call of Duty: World at War is very different from its counterparts. Graphics engine aside, the violence is toned down, resembling its predecessor, and features different scenarios, locations, and missions than other versions.
The story is divided into four campaigns. The first takes place at the start of the war in the South Pacific as the player takes control of Pvt. Joe Miller serving with the US 2nd Marine Division as they begin basic training in North Carolina. This level allows the player to learn the game controls and then fast forward to the Guadalcanal (as if the training mission was a flashback) where the player must survive with their company. There are four other missions, two on Betio Island and two on Saipan Island.
The second part takes place in Europe after D-Day with four missions divided by two different experiences. The first two allow the player to take command of Pvt. Lucas Gibson of the US 80th Infantry Division as he and his squad drive through Luxembourg and finally through Bastone mounted on a Sherman tank, trying to break through Nazi lines. The last two missions allow the player to take control of Pvt. Tom Sharpe of the British 6th Air Division, battling through the ruins of Bastone and the town of Bure.
The third part only consists of two missions which are split between Pvt. Sharpe and Pvt. Gibson and is set in the final days of the war in Europe. The first mission takes place in Wesel where Pvt. Sharpe and his division must find a way to cross the Rhine. The second has Pvt. Gibson and his division fight in the town of Braunau am Inn, birthplace of Adolph Hitler, as they must prevent the launch of a V2 rocket.
The latest campaign goes to Pvt. Joe Miller at the end of the Pacific Theater, this time with two missions on the island of Okinawa, the last mission asking the player to take Castle Shuri with the aim of capturing Okinawa and opening the door to the Japanese mainland.
