As the peace in the Kingdom of Fantasinia crumbles, invaders from the Bronquian Empire occupy the land. The sole survivor of the royal line, Princess Yggdra Yuril Artwaltz, flees Paltina Castle, taking with her the most treasured family heirloom, the Gran Centurio sword. The princess must now seek alliance with other rulers, with the eventual goal of reclaiming her homeland. Yggdra is a firm believer that her holy sword represents ultimate justice - but how far is she willing to go to achieve her goals?
Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone is a tactical role-playing game. Like most games in the genre, it's entirely made up of a series of large-scale strategic battles, interspersed with cutscenes that drive the storyline forward. Player-controlled and enemy units move on a turn-by-turn basis across a battlefield, with range of movement represented as grids.
The distinguishing feature of the game is its "union" based combat mechanics. Unions are formations the player must build to fight effectively, usually made up of multiple units. Each unit, in turn, consists of a leader and up to seven members. Each unit has a weapon affinity, with strengths and weaknesses distributed in a rock-paper-scissors fashion, and individual stats.
Some battle conditions are influenced by the player's choice of a card, available before each battle. Maps vary in terms of settings and assigned skills, which influence the procedure and possibly the outcome of the upcoming battle. Special modes called Aggression and Rage can be activated during battle; the exact effect of these depends on the skills assigned to the player's chosen card.
