Worms Battlegrounds is a strategic shooter part of the long-running Worms series.

The game offers single and multiplayer mode. The single-player mode takes place in a world history museum. The evil villain Lord Crowley-Mesmer wants to take over the world and the player tries to stop him. The single-player gameplay is not just about killing enemy worms, but also saving friends and smashing your way through the level using ninja ropes, jumping, and placing metal bars.

Multiplayer gameplay is much like any other Worms game. Both players receive a set of worms. These worms are randomly placed on a map. The goal is to kill the enemy worms before the enemy can do the same. Multiplayer can be played locally and over the internet. The game features 65 different weapons and utility items, ten of which are new to the series. Among those ten is the ray gun to teleport to other parts of the map.

Players can customize their worms with various items, including headwear and wearables. Clans for multiplayer mode can be created and joined and players can create their own maps to play on. Maps can be customized by choosing the background, what features appear on the map, where the water appears, etc.
