World of Illusion follows on from Castle of Illusion. Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are taken to a magical world and must return home. To do this, they can perform magic tricks and interact with each other in a two-player cooperative mode.
Like many other Disney games of the era, the game has cartoon-like graphics and plays like a side-scrolling platformer. Mickey and Donald can run, jump or attack with their capes. Magic spells are learned after boss fights and are then used as transportation, e.g. fly on a magic carpet, build a deck with cards, etc.
While Mickey can squeeze through some gaps, Donald must find alternate routes in single-player mode. If two players control them, Mickey can pull Donald through a hole. Both can also stand on the shoulders and lower ropes to access certain areas.
