Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is the sequel to Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. As in the original game, players compete against a range of SEGA characters with a few outside guests on tracks inspired by the SEGA games. In this sequel, vehicles can transform into three different types as they pass through special gates: kart form, watercraft form, and airplane form, with different control styles for each. Additionally, many of the tracks transform, changing routes and vehicle types as the race continues.
There are a variety of modes for single and multiplayer experiences. Multiplayer options include online and local races. Multiple local players can also race in Time Trial or Grand Prix modes, or join the World Tour for a long challenge to unlock new characters as well as character mods. Racing with any particular character for an extended period of time earns experience points for that character, which unlocks new vehicle mods to improve performance while riding.
The World Tour features a variety of race types, including Standard, Battle, Traffic Attack, Ring Race, Speed Race, and Pursuit modes. Around the world progression is based on earning stars: the difficulty you select before an event represents the number of stars you will earn if you win. Stars are used to open doors on the map as well as unlock new characters.
