Saint Seiya: The Sanctuary is a fighting game based on the Saint Seiya franchise and follows the TV series "Gold Saint Saga". The player takes on the role of a Saint Seiya who must save the life of the goddess of peace Athena. For this, he must visit twelve temples representing the astrological signs.
The gameplay of each level is divided into two parts: Reach the palace and defeat the Gold Saint. The first is a traditional hack & slash game where the player fights against hordes of enemies. He has the standard repertoire of moves: regular attacks, dodges, blocks and special attacks. For the latter, the player needs a certain amount of power in a special energy bar - it decreases with each special attack and increases if the player is hit. When you reach the temple, the game switches to a one-on-one combat style of play. The core gameplay remains the same, but if the special energy bar is filled to the max, the game can use an extremely powerful attack that results in a typical anime cutscene. But it's not without drawbacks: the enemy can block the attack by mastering a quicktime event (pressing a button at the exact moment it appears on the screen). Then he launches an equally powerful counter-attack which results in a sequence where both players have to mash buttons - whether the counter-attack succeeds depends on which player is faster. If an opponent's life energy is empty, a similar sequence begins.
