The first portable incarnation of the Mario Party series, Mario Party Advance shakes things up a bit on the GBA. With a focus on single-player, there are all sorts of single-player mini-games, a giant single-player board to navigate instead of multiple (Shroom City), and all sorts of different gadgets and game modes to indulge in. .
The main single player experience involves traveling through "Shroom City", which is a major departure from the standard setup of previous Mario Party titles. You have the choice of being Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Yoshi, and depending on who you choose, you'll start at a different spot on the board, which is quite large.
You receive dice rolls to navigate the board and, when you reach special sections of the map, complete special quests, which often involve helping the inhabitants of Shroom City and/or taking part in special challenges. Most quests involve collecting some sort of item from somewhere else or a mini-game. By completing these quests, you'll collect stars, which eventually enable special boss fights with Bowser, and unlock minigames and gadgets, which are simple toy-like contraptions you can play with.
