Chinatown Wars puts the player in control of Huang Lee, a member of the Triads in modern Liberty City. After his father's assassination, Huang arrives from China to deliver a ceremonial sword to his uncle Wu "Kenny" Lee to secure the legacy of the Triad bosses. However, soon after arriving, he is jumped, shot, robbed, and left for dead, only to survive and vow revenge on his father and retrieve the lost sword to bring honor to his family.
While being a mission-based game in the vein of Grand Theft Auto's 3D installments, Chinatown Wars returns to use the more traditional top-down while utilizing a new cel-shaded 3D engine. Many features from more recent GTA games have been included, such as the Shelter, where the protagonist can read emails from other game characters and store cars and items. There's also a programmable GPS system that helps players find their way around Liberty City more easily. A replay feature is also present which allows players to replay previous missions by accessing them through their safe houses.
