Bomberman was a robot in a bomb-making factory yearning for his freedom. Rumors circulated that escaping to the surface would allow the robot to become human. Getting out would be the trick. Each room is inhabited by monsters that must be neutralized and the exit itself hidden under bricks.
The first in the Bomberman series, Bomberman is a single-player game with a top-down view and simplistic controls. In fact, besides movement, the player has only one ability: placing bombs. Each bomb explodes in a cross-shaped explosion (four directions) that can destroy enemies or blocks. Powerups can be found to increase blast size, place additional bombs, increase Bomberman speed, or walk through walls. The goal in each level is to destroy all enemies and escape through the exit before time runs out. Hitting the exit with a bomb blast releases more enemies that also need to be destroyed.
